A History of Shulgarde

The city of Shulgarde started as a simple fishing village on the eastern border of the Etruscan kingdom. It stayed largely forgotten until the Etruscan-Idyrran war, where it served as a landing place for Etruscan ships. Idyrr eventually won that war, expanding west to claim the eastern half of the continent, but there was a problem; a tremendous mountain range separates Idyrr and Etruscus, and the northern mountain passes were controlled by different races of giants.

Refugees from the war moved east until they reached Shulgarde, adding their farming expertise to the fishing trade, and between the two managed to feed the sudden influx of people. Idyrr did its part in the expansion of the city, sending caravans and ships south to Shulgarde in order to avoid the mountains and the troublesome giants. Those were the days of the city’s greatness, as Shulgarde became a major waypoint between Idyrr and the new conquered nation of Etruscus.

But the giants were eventually defeated, the northern passes opened, and the southern route to Shulgarde eventually forgotten. The city became poor, derelict, corrupt, a haven for thieves and smugglers, and would eventually have been forgotten entirely were it not for the recent discovery of gold in the northern hills. Shulgarde is now a volatile mix of Idyrran conquerors, ancient Etruscan families, prospectors, criminals, and adventurers.
